Honda Engine Oil – Why You should only use Genuine
Overview
Changing your Honda engine oil is something we all have to do at some point, but when that time comes we often find ourselves not only asking which type should we buy but also;
Can I use just any engine oil?
What do the numbers and letters mean?
Which type should I use for my Honda engine?
Which brand should I pick?
With the amount of engine oil on the market now, it can often be confusing when trying to decide what you should do. In this guide we will put your mind at ease and tell you all about the benefits of only buying genuine oil that is specially formulated for your Honda.
Can I use any engine oil?
The short answer? No.
Life would be much simpler if this were the case but, without getting too technical, Honda engine oils are specifically made for certain purposes and for the type of engine you have, be it Diesel, Petrol or Hybrid. For instance, 5W-40 oils are made for (but not limited to) high performance engines, higher load bearing vehicles and those which are driven in urban environments.
This is due to the temperature the engine will operate at normally, with 5W-40 being good at both high and low temperatures, but outperforming 5W-30 (for instance) at higher temperatures. Which bring us to the next point…
What do the numbers and letters mean?
The numbers and letters in the broad choice of engine oils have a specific purpose, to let you know what temperature the oil operates at optimally.
For instance, 5W-40 (if we continue using this example), tells us that the engine oil has a wide temperature range. With the “W” standing for “Winter”. 5W generally means the oil will still flow at very low temperatures, down to as low as -30° to -35°C, which in turn means that your engine will still start at such temperatures.
On the other side of the W we have 40, which tells us it will also perform at high temperatures and remain viscous enough (will not thin out) which can cause a number of problems for your engine. 5W40 will perform at temperatures as high as 50°C.
With this in mind, 5W-40 is a good oil of choice for owners who have high performance engines, which run at higher temperatures generally, for people who live in urban areas with a lot of stop/start when driving (and generally higher ambient temperatures) or vehicles with a higher load.
Still a little confused? Or does your Honda not fit the bill for 5W-40? Not not worry we will cover your needs in the next part.
Which type should I use for my Honda engine?
In any case we would recommend you choose the Honda engine oil which is specifically mentioned in your owner’s manual. We also have a handy guide on choosing the right oil for your Honda here: https://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/honda-oils-fluids-information/
