What are the symptoms of a bad shock absorber?

Shock absorbers are a key component of your Civic’s suspension and are responsible for absorbing any shock from the surface you’re driving on. Not only do shocks keep you comfortable, but they also ensure all wheels are on the road and provide you with control.

Some of the most common signs of a bad shock absorber include:

  • Longer stopping distance – If your Civic takes longer to stop, it can mean there’s a problem with the suspension. A lot of issues with stopping distance are down to brake problems. However, damaged suspension can impact stopping distance as well. Struts and shocks distribute weight evenly, and any disruption to this can put unnecessary strain on other car parts, such as the brake discs and pads. If more weight is being forced towards the front, the front brakes have to work harder to bring the car to a stop.
  • Steering wheel vibrations – Signs to look out for include excessive steering wheel vibrations when driving over a bump or a steering wheel that always vibrates while driving.
  • Uneven tire wear – A few things can cause your tires to wear unevenly, including worn shock absorbers. If you notice certain spots with excessive wear, this could be from the tire bouncing and hitting the road unevenly.
  • Excessive bouncing, diving & swerving – Cars the bounce excessively over bumps or dive forwards when braking may be experiencing issues with shock absorbers.

An easy way to see if your shocks need replacing is to push down on each corner of your vehicle. You’ll know it’s time to replace the struts and shocks if your Civic continues to bounce after you let go of the corner.

How long do struts last on a Honda Civic?

On average most Honda Civic struts will last for a minimum of 50,000 miles but may need replacing somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. However, this depends on how well you maintain your car and the condition of the roads you drive on.

If you ever notice leaking or damage to your suspension, you should always repair it immediately.

Can you drive with a faulty Honda Civic shock absorber?

No, you should not drive your Civic if you know one of your shock absorbers is faulty or damaged. Driving a car with damage to the shock absorber system or wider suspension is dangerous. You won’t have as much control over the steering, which could be a serious issue if there is an emergency.

It’s crucial to replace struts and shocks when they become damaged to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive on the road. We stock various suspension parts, including Honda shock absorbers (front and rear), coil springs, bushes, wheel bearings and other spare parts.
