Honda Attempts Guinness World Record With The Real Fuel Challenge
Honda will soon be putting its super-efficient 1.6 i-DTEC engine to the ultimate test, attempting to break the Guinness World Record for fuel efficiency by embarking on an 8,500 mile drive across Europe, taking in all 24 EU countries along the way.
From Belgium Around The EU
This coming Monday, 1st June, two members of Honda’s European Research & Development (R&D) team will embark on the journey from Aalst in Belgium in a Honda Civic Tourer, heading through the Netherlands and Germany, navigating Europe in a clockwise direction before returning to their starting point on June 25th, covering a total mileage of 8,459.
The Guinness World Record attempt is being made following independent research which has shown that 1.6 i-DTEC engine consistently outperforms the fuel efficiency as is quoted by Honda when used in real-world conditions. Of course, Honda want to take the opportunity to showcase just how efficient their engine is and set a benchmark and break a record which has never previously been attempted in Europe.
The rules for the record to be broken state that both drivers must be in the car at all times, across every mile of the journey and the two who have been chosen by Honda are Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren, both of whom are based at Honda’s European manufacturing facility in Swindon.
Fergal McGrath has commented to Honda: “We are very much looking forward to the record attempt, and while we’re excited we’re both a little nervous about the scale of the task that awaits us. A huge amount of planning has gone into taking on this challenge and we look forward to what we hope will be a successful result when we return to Brussels on June 25th. But we’ve got more than 170 hours behind the wheel to contend with first!”
If you’re keen to follow the progress of Fergal and Julian as they embark on this mammoth journey and record breaking attempt, you’ll be able to see how they’re getting on over at Tracker.co.uk.
